What is CMD? A guide for our patients
In the beginning, there was the pain. The abbreviation CMD stands for craniomandibular dysfunction and means that “something is wrong with the jaw joint.”
Based on the possible symptoms, you can see that CMD is very complex and requires a high level of knowledge from the dentist. Often we dentists are not the first port of call, because the causes of the pain are understandably not suspected in the mouth/jaw joint, but in the part of the body that hurts.
Symptoms that may indicate problems with the temporomandibular joint.
Pain in the muscles of mastication / in the jaw | Problems with mouth opening |
Cracking, friction and pain in the jaw joint | Headache and migraine |
Tension in the neck and back | Ear pain |
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) | Dizziness |
Teeth grinding | Facial pain |
Sleep disorders | Snoring |

Functional diagnostics - the path to diagnosis
With the help of functional diagnostics, we can examine the correct and healthy condition of your masticatory organ. It is a scientifically based method of checking function, proven by numerous studies over many years. The correct functional condition has a decisive impact on your entire body.
For example, complaints in the musculoskeletal system, as well as frequent headaches and migraines, may be due to jaw malpositions, also known as craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD).
